Asian Games: Sarvesh Kushare wins men's high jump silver with 2.25m

Sarvesh Kushare won silver in the men's high jump at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on Sunday, 27 September 2026. Sportstar and The Times of India both reported a best clearance of 2.25 metres.

Sportstar said Kushare, 31, from Maharashtra, and Chinese Taipei's Fu Chao-hsuan were tied on 2.25 metres. On countback, Fu took gold and Kushare took silver. The Times of India wrote the winner's name as Chao-hsuan Fu and also gave him the gold at the same height. South Korea's Sanghyeok Woo finished third. Both papers gave his best as 2.22 metres. Sportstar's caption gives the jumper's name as Sarvesh Kushare Anil and credits a Reuters photograph by Andrew Boyers, taken during the final at Paloma Mizuho Sports Park in Nagoya on 27 September.

The Times of India listed the heights he cleared: 2.10 metres, 2.14 metres, 2.18 metres, 2.22 metres and 2.25 metres. He then failed to clear 2.28 metres on all three attempts. The paper did not publish a height-by-height attempt count for Fu. Sportstar stated the countback result and did not set out the attempts either.

Sportstar said the silver ends a 56-year wait for India in the men's high jump at the Asian Games. Its report said Kushare became only the third Indian man to win an Asian Games medal in the event, after Ajit Singh, who won gold in 1954, and Bhim Singh, who won gold in 1966 and bronze in 1970. Bhim Singh's 1970 bronze, the previous Indian medal in the men's high jump at the Games, was at 2.03 metres. The page headline on the same Sportstar report called Kushare the fourth Indian man to win such a medal. The article text names two predecessors and calls him the third.

The Times of India set Sunday's medal against two earlier results. At the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, Kushare cleared 2.26 metres and finished fourth, outside the medals. The Nagoya silver came at 2.25 metres, one centimetre under that Hangzhou mark, with only Fu also on 2.25 metres and Woo next at 2.22 metres. The paper said the Asian Games silver added to a second-place finish at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. It did not give the height or the city of that Commonwealth Games competition.

Sportstar's report ended with the line "More to follow". It did not include a quote from Kushare, a next competition, or the attempt-by-attempt chart behind the countback. The Times of India likewise gave the five clearances and the three misses at 2.28 metres without saying how many attempts each lower height took, or how many attempts Fu used at 2.25 metres.
