On 1 October 2026 HDFC Bank said, in a stock-exchange filing as The Hindu, Moneycontrol, The Economic Times and The Times of India reported it, that the Reserve Bank of India had approved Anup Bagchi as managing director and chief executive officer. The term is three years, from 27 October 2026 to 26 October 2029. It is subject to shareholder approval. Neutral Politics checked those four reports, and CNBC-TV18 and Business Today for the 29 August board date. The filing itself was not opened. The accounts were checked on 2 October 2026 (IST). This note was posted at 6:26 pm IST that day.

The approval covers appointment and remuneration under Section 35B of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949. Moneycontrol, The Economic Times and The Times of India report that scope. The board named Bagchi an additional director from 2 October, until shareholders decide. Moneycontrol's story is timed at 7:23 pm IST on 1 October. The Economic Times is timed at 8:08 pm IST that evening. The Hindu story, by Lalatendu Mishra, is timed at 9:15 pm IST.

Bagchi is managing director and chief executive of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance, a post he has held since June 2023, and he has been with the ICICI Group since 1992. The Economic Times, The Hindu and Moneycontrol report that.

He succeeds Sashidhar Jagdishan. The Economic Times reports that Jagdishan's tenure ends at close of business on 26 October. CNBC-TV18 and Business Today report that Jagdishan told the board on 29 August he would not seek another term. Those two outlets are the source used here for that date.

The Hindu, Moneycontrol and CNBC-TV18 report that the bank recommended two names to the Reserve Bank: Bagchi, and deputy managing director Kaizad Bharucha. The reports read do not say why the Reserve Bank cleared Bagchi rather than Bharucha. Until shareholders vote, the board's step is the additional-director appointment from 2 October. The three-year managing-director term the filing describes still begins on 27 October.

What those reports also do not give is the date of the shareholder vote, or any description of what the change means for customers. This note does not add either.

The cover is a stock photograph by Vitthal Dikonda on Pexels, a Mumbai skyline at twilight. It does not show the bank, the board, or the Reserve Bank.

What's next

What is not known yet is when shareholders vote, why this name was cleared, and whether customers see any change. The approval stands as reported, and it remains subject to that vote.
