Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump spoke by telephone on 30 September 2026, the Prime Minister's Office said. Neutral Politics checked the PMO release, a Reuters report carried by Dawn, The New Indian Express, the Hindustan Times and The Times of India on 1 October 2026 (IST). This note was posted at 11:12 am IST that morning.

The PMO said the two leaders reviewed progress in bilateral cooperation across trade, defence, energy, critical technologies and other areas of mutual interest. It said they reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. It said they exchanged views on regional and international developments, including efforts to promote global peace and security. It said they agreed to maintain close engagement and to remain in touch. Those are the points the release records. It does not add a deal, a date, or a concession.

Modi described the call on X as a "productive conversation." That is his description of the same call. It does not name a subject the PMO release leaves out, and it is not a second official list of what was discussed.

The PMO text does not mention the US Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act. The Hindustan Times, The New Indian Express and The Times of India report the call as coming after that law, and amid India-US trade talks. That is the backdrop those papers give. It is not a sentence in the PMO release. This note does not treat the law as a topic the two leaders are recorded as having discussed.

Reuters, in the copy Dawn published, reports that Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal is in the United States from 29 September to 5 October for talks on a trade agreement and an interim arrangement. That is the reported travel, and the reported purpose of those talks. It is not a result of the telephone call. The PMO release does not mention the visit.

The New Indian Express and The Times of India report, citing sources, that Modi raised India's concerns. That is a claim those two papers attribute to sources. It is not in the PMO text. The PMO's published list of what was reviewed is trade, defence, energy, critical technologies and other areas of mutual interest. "Raised India's concerns" is not one of the sentences the office published. It stays a source-cited claim.

The Times of India reported that there was no White House readout late on 30 September. Neutral Politics found no White House readout in the reports it checked on 1 October. No further outcome is added here. What the call produced, on the record used here, is what the PMO wrote and what Modi wrote on X.

The reports are timed as follows. The PMO release and The Times of India story are dated 30 September, without a clock time in the source list used here. The New Indian Express story is timed at 3:15 pm UTC on 30 September, which is 8:45 pm IST. Dawn's Reuters copy is timed at 10:03 pm IST that night. The Hindustan Times story is timed at 7:31 am IST on 1 October.

What's next

What the Prime Minister's Office has put on the record is a review of trade, defence, energy and critical technologies, a restated partnership, an exchange of views on regional and international developments, and an agreement to stay in touch. What that record does not contain is the US Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act, a White House readout, or the claim that Modi raised India's concerns. Goyal's reported talks in the United States run from 29 September to 5 October. They are a separate reported schedule, not an outcome this call is shown to have produced.

What the newspapers add, and attribute

The Hindustan Times, The New Indian Express and The Times of India place the call after that law and amid India-US trade talks. Reuters, via Dawn, reports that Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal is in the United States from 29 September to 5 October for talks on a trade agreement and an interim arrangement. The New Indian Express and The Times of India, citing sources, report that Modi raised India's concerns. That last line is their source-cited claim. It is not in the PMO release.

Not confirmed

  • That Modi raised India's concerns on the call. The New Indian Express and The Times of India report that, citing sources. The PMO text does not say it.
  • Any White House account of the call. The Times of India reported there was no readout late on 30 September, and none was found in the reports checked on 1 October.
  • A deal, a date, or any other outcome beyond the PMO release and Modi's description of a productive conversation.
