A crowd crush at a Durga Puja pandal in north Kolkata killed 19 people and injured 25 on the evening of 17 October 2026. The reports also call it a stampede. The toll is as of 8:20 am IST on 18 October, from Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari via PTI. This NP NOW note is verified for that toll. The cause is not confirmed. The carousel was posted at 8:21 am IST. A recheck at 8:05 am IST found no higher toll.
The caption calls it the Chorbagan Sarbojanin pandal. Hindustan Times and NDTV spell it Chorebagan. Both name the same pandal, in the Girish Park police station area, on Maha Saptami. The caption, and Kolkata Police via NDTV, say about 7:40 pm at the exit gate. Hindustan Times says about 7:30 pm. The caption and Kolkata Police, via NDTV, said crowds were heavy during rain. It is not a confirmed cause. The pandal is closed.
Later reports agree on 19 dead and 25 injured: The Hindu's live page, updated at 7:20 am IST, Hindustan Times, Economic Times citing PTI at 6:11 am IST, NDTV, and Business Standard citing PTI at 7:28 am IST. Earlier figures were lower. The package's toll note records an older Indian Express headline of 18 and an earlier BBC figure of 17. The Hindu says most of the dead were women and children. Xinhua, on 18 October, said one of the 25 injured was critical. That line is Xinhua's alone. The package has no Xinhua link.
PTI reported that 12 people were detained for questioning, including organisers. The Hindu and the caption also name private guards and staff on duty. News18, citing PTI at 2:30 am IST, quoted the police: "If any lapses are found, we will act as per the law." No arrest has been reported.
The cause is not officially confirmed. Rain, a crowd surge or crowd pressure, and, in the caption, narrow exits are reported factors only. ThePrint, citing PTI, says police are probing crowd management, entry and exit confusion, and rain, and that the cause is not established. NDTV says the chief minister said an organisers' announcement led to the rush. That is his statement in NDTV, not a finding. The Hindu says eyewitnesses flagged crowd-management lapses. Those accounts are separate from the Trinamool Congress allegation.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, of the BJP, announced Rs 25 lakh and a Group D government job for families of the dead, and Rs 5 lakh plus full treatment for the injured. A special investigation team headed by a sitting Calcutta High Court judge will include the STF and the CID. Business Standard, citing PTI, says the government will write to the Chief Justice. The judge is not named. Economic Times, citing PTI, says a high-level panel will inspect major pandals, and names Rajesh Sinha, Anuj Sharma, and Javed Shamim. Hindustan Times says other crowded pandals have been shut.
On the Prime Minister, Hindustan Times reports condolences, with Rs 2 lakh where someone has died and Rs 50,000 for the injured. NDTV reports condolences and Rs 2 lakh.
The Trinamool Congress is the opposition in these reports. Hindustan Times says Mamata Banerjee expressed "shock and grief". The caption quotes "Deeply shocked and saddened" and says she prayed for the injured. Those wordings stay separate. Hindustan Times says the party alleges poor crowd management and inadequate police presence. That is an allegation. Indian Express Bangla says the party demanded answers, accountability, and an impartial probe.
The caption says a state safety panel will inspect the big pandals, and that some crowded pandals are shut for now. It says crowds will rise on Ashtami and Navami. That is the caption's frame, not a forecast. Its advice, to use marked exits, not to push, and to listen to police and volunteers, is the post's advice, not a police order. The photograph is a representational file image of a Durga Puja pandal at Singhee Park, Dover Lane, Kolkata, on 18 October 2023, by Pramanikshreya, on Wikimedia Commons, under CC BY-SA 4.0. It is not Chorbagan, not this crush, and it shows no crowd and no victims. Slides two to five are NP graphics. The post closes with condolences.
