It is not a photograph of this night.
The protest is against the 11,200 MW Siang Upper Multipurpose Project, also called SUMP, in Arunachal Pradesh. Reports say the protest in Pasighat turned violent from late on 23 October until about 4 am on 24 October. That violence came after a 12-hour bandh led by ABK. Hindustan Times and The Times of India are the reports named for the timing and for the bandh. This note records the bandh as the event the reports place before the violence. It does not treat that sequence as a finding that ABK, or any other group, or any party, set the fires.
Reports say the NHPC office and the Pasighat police station were set on fire. Reports say about nine police vehicles were damaged. Hindustan Times and The Hindu are the reports named for the fires and for the vehicles. Reports say the homes of BJP state chief Kaling Moyong, and of MLAs Ninong Ering and Oni Panyang, were vandalised. Hindustan Times and The Times of India are the reports named for those homes. The reports describe the damage. They are not, in this note, a finding of who did it. No group or party has been officially held responsible. This note does not add a name to that blank.
IGP Hibu Tamang says more than 40 police were injured. That figure is his, as Hindustan Times reports it. Hindustan Times also reports that a DSP was shifted to Dibrugarh. The shift is that paper's line. The lines used here do not say why he was shifted.
From 5 pm on 24 October, gatherings of five or more people were banned in Pasighat, Mebo and Ruksin. The Times of India and The New Indian Express are the reports named for that restriction.
The Arunachal Times reports that five youths were arrested. Among the papers named in this package, that arrest line is in The Arunachal Times only. This note does not name the five, and it does not carry the arrest as a figure from the other four reports. Chief Minister Pema Khandu appealed for peace and invited protest groups for talks. The Arunachal Times and The New Indian Express are the reports named for that appeal and that offer.
